Tradition and Events
Saint Agathius
Patron saint of the city of Squillace (CZ) and co-patron of the Archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace. A Roman centurion and martyr beheaded in 304 AD, his relics miraculously arrived on the beach of Squillace between the 7th and 9th centuries.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The month of July – specifically the 16th- is dedicated to the veneration and feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, as established in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII, who introduced the celebration of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel throughout the Church. In Squillace, historical documents and popular tradition point to a major festival and deep devotion among the people.
Carnival
It is one of the most cherished festivals in the local tradition. Celebrations in the historic Calabrian village combine parades and masks with the showcasing of the area’s traditional products.
The dates and manner of the celebrations vary each year according to the liturgical calendar.
- Route: The events usually unfold along the streets of the historic center of Squillace Antica (at approximately 344 m above sea level) and the surrounding area.
