Squillace Carnival: over fifty years of history, creativity and tradition
The Squillace Carnival is one of the area’s most beloved events and a defining feature of its local identity, a tradition rooted in the early 1970s that, for over half a century, has united generations through creativity and collective participation.
Its official history began in 1974 with the parade of a simple ox-drawn cart, the result of a spontaneous initiative by a group of young people who, using salvaged materials and plenty of imagination, decided to bring joy to the town’s streets. From that moment on, the Carnival became a highly anticipated event that drew widespread participation, bringing together entire neighborhoods, families, and local artisans.
In the years that followed, the event grew rapidly. The parade floats became increasingly elaborate and spectacular, drawing inspiration from fantasy, cinema, and pop culture figures, while maintaining the traditional political and social satire that is a hallmark of the Squillace Carnival. The contributions of artists, local craftspeople, and students from the local art high school were also crucial, transforming the festival into a genuine workshop of folk art.
With its mix of music, costumed groups, choreography, and the traditional “Dead Carnival” ritual, the event has become a symbol of community cohesion and belonging. Thanks to the efforts of the “Carnevale Squillacese” folklore association, the festival has successfully reinvented itself over time, reclaiming its original spirit while also experimenting with new formats, such as summer parades along the seafront.
A significant milestone was reached in 2024 when the Municipality of Squillace officially recognized the Carnival as a historic event, thereby affirming its cultural, social, and tourism value. This recognition aims to foster the preservation of the tradition, the involvement of new generations, and the promotion of the local area.
Today, the Squillace Carnival is not merely a celebration but a collective heritage that tells a story spanning over fifty years of history, passion, and creativity. It is an event that continues to pass on a sense of community, keeping alive a ritual capable of bridging past and future and embodying the most authentic soul of Squillace.
