In Squillace, this occasion represents far more than a mere religious festival; it is a centuries-old tradition that unites faith, memory, and community identity.

The origins of this devotion date back to the early 17th century, when a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary of Mount Carmel was erected within the cathedral under the patronage of the Chillà and Berlingieri families. Over the centuries, a confraternity was also established, approved by the King of Naples in 1776, which helped to spread and sustain devotion to the Virgin of Mount Carmel.

The Chillà family played a pivotal role in the history of the festival, serving for generations as custodians of the precious wooden statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which is still venerated today in the parish church of San Pietro Apostolo. Until 1917, the statue was kept in a room specifically dedicated to it and was brought into the church only during the month of July for the celebrations.

The festival is also deeply rooted in the tradition of the *pignatari* (potters) of Squillace; in past centuries, being occupied with summer trade fairs, they would postpone the celebrations until the first Sunday of August. This gave rise to a popular tradition, featuring processions, music, decorations, and moments of communal sharing, that continues to involve the entire community today.

Over the years, devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has steadily grown, engaging generations of the faithful—both young and old—who have helped organize religious, cultural, and social events. A testament to this profound bond with the Virgin of Carmel is the presence, since 2014, of the Carmelite convent of the “Messengers of the Holy Spirit” (*Messaggeri dello Spirito Santo*).

The tradition continues to evolve through new forms of participation. Recently, a new casket was donated to house the Madonna’s gold ornaments and *ex-voto* offerings, symbols of the faithful’s devotion and gratitude. This gesture is part of a broader initiative to honor and preserve the festival’s historical and cultural heritage.

After more than four centuries, Our Lady of Mount Carmel remains a spiritual anchor and a symbol of unity for Squillace, passing down a faith from generation to generation that stays vibrant and deeply rooted in the heart of the community.

Madonna del Carmine Four Centuries of Faith, Tradition, and Popular Devotion On July 16th, the Church celebrates Our Lady of Mount Carmel, a Marian devotion deeply cherished and rooted in the hearts of the faithful.
